Brief

In 2021 we were contacted by a client in Llandeilo who wanted to be able to access a small island in the middle of a lake on their property, the perfect place from which to watch the sunset over the mountains. He requested something low maintenance, low impact, and in keeping with the area.

Solution

The short distance between the lake bank and the island meant that we could produce a simple walkway, effectively a two-ended jetty between the shores. The client was keen to keep the impact on the view to a minimum, particularly from the 6-bedroom Airbnb they ran on the nearby hill. To make sure it was as invisible as possible, we decided to powder coat the aluminium legs to a colour that perfectly matched the composite decking material, itself very similar to the bark of the surrounding trees.

Challenges

The main consideration was keeping the walkway out of sight, so we spent some time planning out the exact positioning. The site we settled on was quite a way from the parking space, so we had to carry the aluminium box sections and pieces of composite down to the installation site, and worked hard over our two day stay to get the walkway in quickly and with minimal impact on the banks and vegetation around. As it was a wet mid-November, our late evening finishes ran to work in the dark. It was all worth it on the final day, however, to stand in front of the Airbnb and look over the beautiful lake, the low walkway tucked away and blending in perfectly with the bare willow trees.
